What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not sure if your situation is urgent? Here are the most common emergencies we handle — and what to do until help arrives.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical. A knocked-out adult tooth can often be saved if treated within 30-60 minutes. Call us immediately.

Until help arrives: Pick up tooth by crown (not root), rinse gently, try to reinsert. If unable, store in milk or saliva. Don’t let it dry out.

Severe Toothache

Persistent, throbbing pain often indicates infection. Severe pain shouldn’t wait — especially with swelling or fever.

Until help arrives: Rinse with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter pain reliever (avoid aspirin on gums). Apply cold compress for swelling.

Broken/Cracked Tooth

A broken tooth can expose nerves and lead to infection. Sharp edges can also cut your tongue or cheeks.

Until help arrives: Rinse mouth with warm water. Apply cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces. Avoid chewing on that side.

Dental Abscess

A serious infection around the tooth root or gums. Can be life-threatening if left untreated. Look for swelling, fever, or pus.

Until help arrives: Don’t ignore swelling of face or jaw. Rinse with mild salt water. Seek immediate care — infections can spread rapidly.

Lost Filling or Crown

While not always painful, exposed tooth structure can be sensitive and vulnerable to further damage or decay.

Until help arrives: Save the crown. Apply dental cement (from pharmacy) to protect the tooth. Avoid sticky or hard foods. Don’t try to reattach with superglue.

Bleeding Gums

Some bleeding after dental work is normal. But persistent, heavy bleeding — especially after trauma — requires urgent care.

Until help arrives: Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze for 15-20 minutes. Avoid rinsing, spitting, or hot liquids. If bleeding doesn’t stop, call us.

Object Stuck in Teeth

When something is lodged between teeth and can’t be removed with gentle flossing. Don’t use sharp tools — call us instead.

Until help arrives: Try gentle flossing. Don’t use pins, tweezers, or sharp objects. If you can’t remove it easily or it’s causing pain, call us right away.

Jaw Injury or Dislocation

Trauma to the jaw, inability to close or open mouth, or significant pain. Often requires both dental and medical care.

Until help arrives: Apply cold compress. Don’t try to force jaw movement. Take pain reliever as directed. Seek immediate emergency care.

Quick Safety Tips & FAQ

Important first-aid tips and answers to common emergency questions.

Time is critical! Pick up the tooth by the crown (top, white part) — never touch the root. If it’s dirty, gently rinse with milk or saline (don’t scrub). Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket and hold it in place with clean gauze. If you can’t reinsert it, store the tooth in milk, saline, or your own saliva. Call us immediately at (555) 911-TOOTH — the sooner we see you (ideally within 30-60 minutes), the better the chances of saving the tooth.
Call us right away if you experience: severe pain that disrupts sleep or daily activities, swelling in your face or gums, fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, bleeding that won’t stop, or pain that’s been worsening over several days. Mild sensitivity to hot or cold that goes away quickly is usually not an emergency. When in doubt, call — we can help you assess over the phone.
For most dental emergencies, a dentist is the right choice because we have specialized equipment, training, and materials. ERs can help with pain management, infections, and trauma control, but they typically can’t perform definitive dental treatment. Go to the ER for: severe facial trauma, difficulty breathing/swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or jaw fractures. For everything else, call us — we’ll save you time and money.
Don’t let cost stop you from seeking care. We accept all major insurance, offer 0% financing for qualified patients, and have payment plans available. We’ll always discuss costs upfront and work with you to find a solution. Skipping emergency treatment can lead to far more expensive problems down the road. Your health comes first.
Yes, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain while you get to us. Follow package directions. Avoid aspirin placed directly on the gum or tooth — it can burn the tissue. Avoid alcohol if you’re taking pain medication. Always tell us what you’ve taken when you arrive.
Yes, but calling ahead helps us prepare for your arrival, assign the right specialist, and minimize your wait time. Our emergency entrance is designed for quick access, and we have dedicated emergency staff available 24/7. If you can’t call, come in immediately — but a quick call can save you valuable minutes once you arrive.
